 What's New for the 2018 Ford F-150?

As the best-selling entry in the best-selling vehicle series in the United States, the Ford F-150 gets a major update for the 2018 model year as it reaches the mid-point of its unprecedented thirteenth production cycle. One thing remains unchanged, though: the trims, which are the XL, XLT, LARIAT, Raptor, King Ranch®, Platinum, and Limited.

Most of the changes concern the powertrain. Gone is the base-line 3.5-liter V6; in its place is the 3.3-liter Ti-VCT V6, which produces 290 horsepower and 265 lb-ft of torque: similar to the outgoing engine, but with more fuel efficiency. The new 3.5-liter is mated to a 6-speed transmission. The other three available engines received minor power and efficiency upgrades, and each of them is joined to a brand-new 10-speed transmission. The three engines are the 2.7-liter EcoBoost® V6, which produces 325 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque; the 5.0-liter Ti-VCT V8, which supplies 395 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque; and the 3.5-liter EcoBoost® V6, which churns out 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque (and is available as a “high output” variant with 450 horsepower and 510 lb-ft of torque). While previous models only had stop/start technology with the 2.7-liter, it is extended to the 5.0-liter and 3.5-liter with the 2018 model year to improve fuel efficiency across the board. In addition, the F-150’s maximum towing ability is boosted to 12,000 lbs.

There are three body style sizes: the two-door Regular Cab, which seats up to three people; and the SuperCab and (the slightly larger) SuperCrew for extending maximum occupancy to six. Also available on the F-15o are three bed lengths: 5.5 feet, 6.5 feet, and 8 feet. Standard comfort and convenience features include cruise control, a 2.3-inch productivity screen, and an AM/FM radio tuner.

Upper-level enhancements or additions include leather upholstery, 8- or 10-way power adjustability on the seats, keyless entry, remote start, auto-dimming rearview mirror, a single-disc CD player, dual-zone automatic control, SiriusXM® satellite radio service, a Wi-Fi hotspot for wireless Internet service, and SYNC® infotainment integration. For restraint and cushioning in the event of a crash, the 2018 Ford F-150 is equipped with dual front impact airbags, dual front seat-mounted side-impact airbags, and a pair of side curtains.

Other standard safety features include AdvanceTrac® (for electronic vehicle stability control) with roll stability control, four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes, a rearview camera with dynamic hitch assist, curve control, a post-crash alert system, traction control, and a theft-deterrent system. Upgrades and enhancements include a reverse sensing system to bolster the functionality of the camera, a perimeter alarm to enhance the theft-deterrent system, and a blind spot information system with cross-traffic alert.
